PamRoc’s Travel Diary: Our Caribbean Gem-Aruba
Aruba has our hearts! Not only was it our first getaway together as a couple, but it’s also where we got engaged. This island holds a special place in our lives, and every trip feels like coming home. Aruba’s beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine, and warm, welcoming locals make it unforgettable. It’s incredibly safe, very clean, and always a paradise to soak up the sun. Here are some of our highlights and recommendations:
Where We Stay:
Holiday Inn Resort Aruba Beach Resort & Casino – This is our go-to on Palm Beach, even though we’ve traveled the world and stayed at plenty of Hiltons and Marriotts. The Holiday Inn Aruba’s location is unbeatable. The staff is amazing, and while the rooms might be a touch dated, they’re always clean and comfortable. The resort has three spacious buildings, beautiful indoor and outdoor bars, two inviting pools, and plenty of palapas on the beach.
Tip: Before heading to this resort, check the latest rules for reserving a palapa. Policies change frequently, and shade is essential in the Aruba sun! This resort is located in the high-rise area of the island, making it central and convenient.
Other Great Stays in Aruba:
- Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino
- Riu Palace Antillas
- Barcelo Aruba
- The Ritz Carlton Aruba
- Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino
- Playa Linda Beach Resort
Each of these properties offers its unique vibe and amenities, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for luxury, family-friendly features, or all-inclusive options.
Aruba will always be special to us, and we can’t wait for you to experience it. Reach out if you’d like tips or have questions—we’re happy to share!
Aruba Travel Tips and Favorites
Aruba is pure paradise! After years of visiting, we’ve gathered some go-to tips and recommendations to make the most of your stay.
Travel Essentials for Aruba:
- Bring Your Own Floats: A float can make your beach day extra fun, and it’s always a hit with kids and adults alike. We like to bring floats and then leave them with other guests or staff when we’re heading out – a little gift that keeps on giving! I purchased these on Amazon and it comes with a pump: Amazon.com: 3 Pack Inflatable Pool Floats Adult Size Water Hammock,Pool Floaties Toys,4-in-1 Multi-Purpose Floats for Swimming Pool,Pool Rafts Lounge Chairs Floating, for Vacation Fun and Rest : Toys & Games
- Water Shoes: These are a must if you’re planning on water sports or land excursions. They’re easy to rinse off, dry quickly, and keep your feet protected on rocky terrain or hot sand. I purchased these on Amazon: Amazon.com | Water Shoes for Women Men Quick-Dry Aqua Socks Swim Beach Barefoot Yoga Exercise Wear Sport Accessories Pool Camping Must Haves Adult Youth Size | Water Shoes
- Silverware: Why do you ask? Well, I am not someone who doesn’t like eating with wood utensils, and I typically have an Eduardo’s special Acai bowl for breakfast each day. They offer wooden utensils, and let’s just say, eating peanut butter off a wood stick…YUK. So, I bring my own silverware and wash it daily to enjoy this treat! Take a look at these on Amazon: Amazon.com: Logcow Portable Travel Utensils Set,Reusable Utensils,Travel Camping Cutlery Set,Stainless Steel Flatware Set with Case,Lunch Boxes Workplace Camping School Picnic (Sivler) : Sports & Outdoors
Restaurant Favorites on the Island:
- Papiamento’s: A beautiful, romantic spot around a private home’s pool. We make it a point to dine here every trip. The staff is fantastic, especially Maria, who’s been there since our first visit over a decade ago. The food is divine, especially dishes like the hot stone specialties and Eduardo’s Seafood Pot. Bonus: Their cigar room is perfect for a post-dinner cigar. @papiamentorestaurantaruba
- Flying Fishbone: Known for its picturesque seating in the water, this is a one-time must-try. If you go around 4 pm, make sure to bring a hat since the sun can be intense. As the sun sets, the view is absolutely stunning, and the food and staff are wonderful. @flying_fishbone
- Madame Janette Aruba: A lively spot with live music in a cozy courtyard. It’s got a great atmosphere, tasty dishes, and friendly staff. The bar is also a lovely setting for a casual drink. @madamejanettearuba
- Zeerover: For a laid-back, local experience, Zeerover serves up the “catch of the day” right on the water. You can relax with a cocktail while they prepare your meal. It’s fresh, delicious, and the oceanfront setting is beautiful. @zeerovers
- Azzurro Ristorante Italiano: Pam’s absolute favorite! Located on the beach behind Playa Linda, it’s perfect for a romantic sunset dinner. With beautiful views of Palm Beach, excellent food, and amazing staff, it’s an unforgettable experience. If you are lucky enough to have Ernand wait on you, then tell him hi from ME! Make sure to try the Burrata Appetizer with Prosciutto. They’re part of the Giannis Group, which has other great spots on the island – and reservations are a must! @azzurroaruba @giannisgroup
More to Love in Aruba:
Aruba has so much to offer beyond the beaches. Some of our favorite activities include:
- ATV Tours: Exploring the deserted parts of the island by ATV is an exciting, scenic adventure. You’ll get a bit dirty, but it’s worth it for the views, which include historic sites like the old gold mine and lighthouse, and some hidden gems on the rugged side of the island.
- Natural Pool at Arikok National Park: A tourist favorite where you can swim in a unique, natural rock formation pool. It’s a bit of a trek but so worth it!
- Catamaran Cruises & Sunset Sails: Nothing beats a sunset sail on the sparkling Caribbean waters. It’s one of the most relaxing and scenic ways to end your day on the island.
I highly recommend Pelican Adventures and DePalm Tours for excursions on the island! Over the years, I’ve met some amazing people through these companies who truly make each experience memorable.
Recently, I used Kini Kini Transfer & Tours for a private car service, and they were absolutely AMAZING! Whether you’re staying on the island or visiting via a cruise ship, Kini Kini offers exceptional service. They’ll pick you up right at the pier for a seamless, personalized tour of the island.
One last tip to share: The departure process from Aruba’s airport can be lengthy, as you clear U.S. customs before leaving. While they’re working on improving the system, I had an incredible experience with First Class Experience Aruba during my last visit. They streamlined the entire departure process, greeting me at the car door outside the airport and guiding me through all the checkpoints. I was through everything in just 30 minutes!
Aruba is truly a gem, and we’ve been fortunate to make wonderful friends here over the years. If you’d like additional tips or recommendations for your trip, feel free to reach out!
