My maiden voyage was in 1989 aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Festivale. If you remember that classic, you’re a true cruise connoisseur! Fun Fact – I hit the jackpot—literally! I won the largest Bingo payout at the time: $1,500. The legendary Cruise Director Eddie Capone handed me the CASH on stage, and we became friends, staying in touch for years. At one point, I even considered becoming a cruise director myself! Nowadays, Bingo jackpots can soar up to $5,000!

In the early ’90s, I began selling cruises, navigating the golden era of liners like:
NCL’s S/S Norway
Royal Caribbean’s Monarch, Majesty, Sovereign of the Seas & Nordic Empress
Carnival’s Celebration and Jubilee
Ah, 1996—a time of dial-up internet, questionable fashion choices, and when Carnival Destiny strutted onto the scene as the first cruise ship to exceed 100,000 gross tons. We all thought, “This ship is HUGE!”—like, “better pack a map and a compass” huge.
***Fast forward to today, and Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has entered the chat, flexing with a whopping 248,663 gross tons. That’s nearly 2.5 times the size of our dear old Destiny.
To put it in perspective: if cruise ships were smartphones, Destiny was the chunky flip phone, and Icon of the Seas is the sleek, do-it-all, can’t-live-without-it device of your dreams. And just like that, we’ve gone from “Where’s the buffet?” to “Is there an app for that?”
